About the Paintings

My work is inspired by favorite locations in northern Michigan. I express the emotional connection I feel to landscape. I’m very attracted to trees. I see their postures, personalities, conversations and dances. The sculptural shapes I see have rhythmic movement described by light and shadow. I paint plein air from direct observation, and in the studio from sketches, photos and memory. As I paint I keep in mind why I have chosen a particular location and feature those essential elements in the painting. My work interprets landscape through various levels of abstraction and representation.
